Prepare to Care is a new training program available across Iowa that provides career pathways and flexible careers for individuals involved in direct care work. Direct care positions provide hands-on support and care to people with health conditions, illnesses, or disabilities and are among the fastest-growing and highest-demand jobs in Iowa.
Who are direct care professionals?
Direct care professionals go by many titles—certified nurse aide, home care and home health aide, personal care attendant, direct support professional, and many more. This valuable segment of the workforce serve in private homes, assisted living and nursing facilities, hospitals, adult day centers, and a variety of settings for people with disabilities.
What are the benefits?
Prepare to Care training can be taken by individuals with experience who are currently working and by those who want to enter the direct care field.

Core Training
Core training teaches basic foundation knowledge and an introduction to the profession. This course is a pre-requisite to all other Prepare to Care classes. You will learn:
- Professionalism
- Person-centered approach
- Infection control
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Documentation
- Mobility assistance and worker safety
This training is ideal for all direct care professionals.
